No news is bad news
It has been a while since I have written and the news was not great for my racing.
At the beginning of September, I was not feeling well and took a few days off from running. Instead of feeling better, it just got worse and while I am waiting for clearance from my doctors, all my running has been put on hold.
This is a big disappointment, as I was hoping to run in a marathon this year. Now I am just hoping to feel well enough to go back to running again.

Getting up to date
Wow July 3rd was the last update - a lot has happened since then:
White Memorial Summer Cross Country Series - Great event(s) you get to pick your distance - 2K, 3K, 4K or 5K. I choose to run the 5K all the time to build up my distance training. I think I ran 4 events out of the 8 and knocked 2 minutes off my time from first to last. This is a great series and put on by some great volunteers - we had 191 runners at one race! More info:
Litchfield Parks and Rec
Next - the 11th Annual People's Forest 7 mile Trail Run. Now 7 miles is not a lot, but when you have 2 climbs of over 500 feet and the second one is climbing on rocks... well you get the picture. I was lucky to run most of the race with Cindy S, and it was great to have someone to run with as it was easy to get lost in the woods. One section has you running on a thin ledge with a 40 ft drop to your left. I was happy with my time for the first time running this, and plan on doing better next year - after that???
Torrington Road Race - I was disappointed in my time, even though it was my 2nd fastest at this event. It got hot and muggy just before the race and that took most out of us. This race is hitting its 40th anniversary next year and the organizers promise something special.
Roxbury 8.2 mile Judd's Bridge Run - another fun run from the Roxbury Group - This was a fun course and my 5 mile mark time was faster that the Torrington Road Race! The weather was better and the grade slightly downhill - the back was a little tougher. Another great volunteer group - which leads to
Roxbury Mile II - This is a run event with a very challenging field - to pacing, just 6 minutes of flat out running. Bob was going solo on running the event, but people stepped up to help with the timing and scoring and this allowed two heats to be run. Results will be published later, but I ran a 6:21 in the first heat (okay time for what I had today) and ran about a 6:58 in the second - yes, I ran the second as a pacer for Bob and also to see what I could do - could have used a little more of a recovery, but quite happy with the results.
Now, with 6 weeks to go, am I ready to try for the Hartford Marathon????

Busy Weekend
On the weekend of June 26-27, 2010, I ran two races.
On Saturday I ran in the Derby Dash, a 5K race along the waterfront in Derby CT.
A great race, very flat course and a good race for beginners.
I did it for fun and ran comfortably under 24 minutes (results)
On Sunday, I ran in the Harwinton Road Race. It was supposed to be a 5K but they changed the course to make it 3.4 miles.
I again ran this at the last minute and just for fun - I started at the back of the pack. It has a REALLY tough hill at the one mile mark - (almost as bad as Gallows Lane!) but the rest is flat or slightly down hill. Even at 10 in the morning it was hot! Did not have a bad finish (Results), and another well run and fun race.

Litchfield Road Race
Yes - success!
I had two goals going into Litchfield - Finish under 1 hour and run all the way up Gallows Lane.
Well I did not make it all the way up the hill, but did finish under 1 hour.
Results
I was 499 but now I see I am 500 - oh well!
Goal for next year - take off 2 minutes and run up Gallows Lane - if at first you don't succeed...

Catching up on races
Well Running season has picked up. On May 30 I ran the Race around the Lake in New Hartford, June 4th was the Moonlight run in New Milford and June 6 was the 3 mile Team Fox - Parkinson's Run in Brookfield CT. Each race is a little different. The first was 3.5 miles, the last 2 around 3, and all were new courses or new to me so it is tough to get a good feel of how I am running. Well it better be good as the next race is the Litchfield Road Race- 7 miles and one of the toughest hills in any CT race - Gallows Lane.
More to come.
More to come.

Barkhamsted 5K
This is the River Rum but it us turning into the rain run.
A thunderstorm cleared the area just before the race leaving god running conditions.
A the 1/2 way mark it started pouring and the rumble of thunder came back.
A very wet but enthusiastic field had a good race.
This afternoon the sun comes out.......
Distance - 5K
Time - 24:11
Average Pace - 7:48
Position overall/Class 27/150, 6

Half Marathon Simulation
Yes, I ran 13.1 miles on 5/1/2010.
It was on a trail near my home, run on my GPS in training mode, and it was pretty lonely out there.
But I did it in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 38 seconds - about 5 minutes less than my target.
A full marathon is almost unthinkable at this time, but know that I know I can do a half, the 5 mile races don't look so long anymore......

Bye Bye 2010
It was a tough call, but I have decided to sit out 2010.
In taking an inventory of my car and support equipment, I realize that there is just too much work that needs to be done to get the car ready.
Besides that, my house has suffered from too many years of neglect and needs attention.
So 2010 will be spend rebuilding the car for 2011. The engine needs to be rebuilt, the tranny needs work and the chassis needs some TLC as if comes up on 30 years old!
I the meantime I will use this blog for my other racing - I will do a half marathon by the summer and a full marathon in the fall.

Still Winter
Yes, it is still winter and nothing has been done to the car. Between family responsibilities and economic realities (still have a job, but barely), it is tough to commit to spending the money I need to to make the car competitive. Oh, did I mention that it is 12 degrees outside.....
Now I am still slot car racing - see the Road & Track article by Chip Ganassi if you think that slot car racing has no bearing on "real" racing, and I have made one trip to the kart track this year, so racing is on my mind - not just yanking a motor and tranny out of said formula vee.
Come on Spring - come early.
